Man accused of setting fire to Baton Rouge home with four children inside

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A man is facing multiple charges after allegedly setting fire to a home with four children inside.

Around 12:39 a.m. Aug. 12, the Baton Rouge Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 2500 block of Inverrary Drive. BRFD said the door had been forced open, and gasoline was poured and ignited in two areas of the home.

Witnesses, including the children, reported hearing the door being kicked in, smelling gasoline, and seeing flames as they escaped. According to BRFD, multiple witnesses said the suspect, Alfred Deon Jarvis Sr., 46, yelled, “Everyone is going to die,” while starting the fires.

Officials said Jarvis was prohibited from entering the property due to two active protective orders. The victim told investigators that Jarvis had been at the home two days earlier and removed the Ring doorbell camera. Investigators also went through threatening messages and a voice recording in which Jarvis allegedly said he would kill the victim.

BRFD said the fire caused about $1,000 in damage.

The State Police Fugitive Task Force, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, and West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office assisted in his arrest.

Jarvis was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of four counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count each of aggravated arson, home invasion, criminal trespass, and violation of protective orders.

The case remains under investigation.
