Fire investigators were called to help the Zachary Fire Department shortly after 7:50 a.m., following a structure fire that destroyed a vacant trailer and caused an estimated $30,000 in damages. Investigators found that the fire was set on purpose. The fire department said there were no accidental ignition sources found at the scene.
The location had reportedly been the site of several recent fires involving vacant structures. In each case, Brooklyn LaFleur, 42, was allegedly present. Witnesses told investigators that fires tended to break out when LaFleur was nearby. The homeowner said LaFleur was asked to leave the property a day earlier due to worries about possible damage.
BRFD said that LaFleur gave different stories about where she was during the fire. She claimed she was inside a nearby trailer with her boyfriend. But that account was disputed by multiple witnesses, including the boyfriend and his sister.
BRFD said LaFleur revealed specific details about the fire that would only be known to someone who witnessed its early stages. She also admitted she had been told to leave the property, though she claimed to believe the order was temporary.
LaFleur was charged with simple arson and criminal trespass. The case remains under investigation.
