List: ‘The Paper’ just the latest TV show set in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — More than 11 million people call Ohio home, but so do some fictional TV characters.

Spanning from Cleveland to Cincinnati, TV shows over the years, including an upcoming sequel to “The Office,” have taken place in just about every corner of Ohio.

Characters like Andy Travis, Rachel Berry, and Alex Keaton all became household names, and while the characters are not real, their fictional worlds may not be that unfamiliar.

The following shows were based in Ohio, and are listed from newest to oldest. This is not an exhaustive list.

The Paper

Setting: Toledo

Aired: Coming September 2025

Stars: Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei

The documentary crew that filmed the story of Dunder Mifflin (The Office) is in search of a new subject. The crew stumbles across the Toledo Truth Teller and a publisher trying to save the newspaper.

Hot in Cleveland

Setting: Cleveland

Aired: 2010 – 2015

Stars: Betty White, Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick

Created by Suzanne Martin, the show follows three middle-aged women who mistakenly end up in Cleveland after a diverted flight from Los Angeles to Paris. The trio decides that Los Angeles isn’t for them anymore and decides to stay in Cleveland.

Glee

Setting: Lima

Aired: 2009 – 2015

Stars: Lea Michelle, Jane Lynch, Matthew Morrison, Cory Monteith

Created by Ian Brennan, Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy, Glee follows a club at McKinley High that competes in a choir competition circuit. The show has often been compared to High School Musical, but for adults. The show ran for six seasons.

The Drew Carey Show

Setting: Cleveland

Aired: 1995 – 2004

Stars: Drew Carey, Diedrich Bader, Kathy Kinney

In The Drew Carey Show, created by Carey himself and Bruce Helford, Drew has been working at a department store for 10 years. The show ran for nine seasons.

Family Ties

Setting: Columbus

Aired: 1982 – 1989

Stars: Michael J. Fox, Michael Gross, Meredith Baxter

This show, created by Gary David Goldberg, chronicled a family with two ex-hippie parents raising a traditional suburban family in the Reagan era with a conservative son. The show ran for seven seasons.

WKRP in Cincinnati

Setting: Cincinnati

Aired: 1978 – 1982

Stars: Gary Sandy, Gordon Jump, Loni Anderson

Created by Hugh Wilson, this show centers around a program director who tries to bring a struggling AM radio station — WKRP in Cincinnati — back to life. The show ran for four seasons.
