Durbin backs Texas Democrats’ stand against gerrymandering

Monday marks more than a week since some of a group of Texas democratic lawmakers came to Illinois in protest.

On Sunday August 3, dozens of Texas Democrats left the state to keep the Texas legislature from having a quorum and voting on a new congressional map that would strip away five democratic seats from congress and give republicans needed votes.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is leading this redistricting effort, at the urging of President Donald Trump, who’s had some difficulty in getting some legislation passed through the house because of the razor thin GOP majority.

On Monday, the Texas Democrats held a press conference with Illinois Senator Dick Durbin on Chicago’s far northwest side as they’re under threat of being arrested by federal agents and brought back to Texas to force that vote.

Illinois’ own Republicans are quick to call out Illinois for it’s own gerrymandered congressional map, giving Democrats and edge.

A map that was done after the last census, not mid-decade like this one in Texas.
