North Carolina mountain earthquake cluster grows, rattled for 2nd time this week

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The second earthquake in less than a week rattled a North Carolina mountain town on Saturday morning — in an area that has been hit with several small quakes.

The first quake this week was a 2.0 magnitude on Monday, located 6.1 miles west of Rosman in Transylvania County.

The latest earthquake rattled the same area — about 6 miles west of Rosman — just before 7 a.m. Saturday with a 2.1 magnitude, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The area of the Saturday and Monday quakes are near Lake Toxaway and south of Wolf Ridge.

This marks the fifth small earthquake in western North Carolina so far this year, with all being centered in Transylvania County.

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Tennessee in May, rattling large areas of western North Carolina and the Upstate of South Carolina.

The latest earthquake on Saturday did not have any reports of people noticing the shaking.
