Youth Aviation Expo takes flight in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WBOY) — The 5th annual Carl Hopkins Youth Aviation Expo welcomed kids from all over the state to come to Bridgeport on Friday to get hands-on experience with the aviation industry.

The free event offered tours of medical and military helicopters, the chance to fly model planes and a flight simulator.

Fairmont State University’s aviation program attended the event to give insights into career opportunities in the state.

Victoria Yeager, the wife of the late Chuck Yeager, was at the event and spoke with 12 News about the importance of careers in Aviation.

“Aviation really saves lives. We’ve got Healthnet that will do life flights, and you’ve got firefighters that are flying in those airplanes and spotters and also military. But here they’re building a lot of aviation products, so it’s very interesting and so aviation pervades all our lives, no matter whether you’re really in the industry or not,” Yeager said.

Chuck Yeager served as chair of the Young Eagles program, where he aimed to increase interest in the aerospace industry amongst kids. Victoria believes that events like the Aviation Expo can continue that mission even years after his passing.

“I think he’d be thrilled […] it’s great. It keeps kids interested, it keeps them out of trouble, it keeps them having a goal, which is always important, having a dream, a goal,” Yeager said.

The Carl Hopkins Youth Aviation Expo will continue Saturday, Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Bridge Sports Complex.
