Christopher Lee Shaw, 43, was arrested on felony charges of aggravated assault and discharging a firearm.
Salt Lake City Police responded to reports of a man with a firearm who entered a residence Thursday evening. Officers say they quickly began setting up containment when they heard a “loud bang.”
According to court documents, police forced entry into the home where they found Shaw holding a handgun. One of the residents of the home told police that Shaw had pointed the gun at him.
The resident told police the handgun had been pointed at him was his own. He and a roommate had left the home to get dinner earlier that day. When they returned, one of them noticed the gun was missing.
The residents soon found Shaw pointing the gun and threatening to shoot one resident in the knee, court documents show. The resident then fled and called police, who later found a bullet hole in the ceiling of the home.
After his arrest, Shaw told police he was trying to recover the firearm which he claims belonged to his brother who passed away five years ago, according to court documents. When asked why he fired the gun, Shaw told officers he wanted a police response so they could “prove the gun belonged to his deceased brother.”
Shaw is being held without bail in the Salt Lake County Jail.
