Driver on I-35 hit by bullet that came from target practice

One person was hit by a bullet that came from three people shooting target practice near the interstate in Chisago County.

On Thursday at around 10:40 a.m., the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a 911 call from a passenger in a car on southbound I-35 near the Harris exit. The caller said the driver of their vehicle had been shot in the leg by a bullet that entered through the driver’s side door.

Deputies arrived on scene and reported hearing gunfire consistent with rifle target shooting. Law enforcement began searching the area to determine where the gunfire was coming from.

Three men were found on a private property along I-35 and were reportedly shooting rifles at a target positioned in the direction of the interstate.

The sheriff’s office said the estimated distance from the shooting location to where the victim was hit was over 1,500 feet. The three men are cooperating with authorities.

The 48-year-old man who was shot sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his leg and was brought to the hospital. The three other people in the vehicle were not injured.

The Chisago County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident.
