
Kagay announced in a press release on Aug. 8 that he has charged Avant Chambers, 18 of Topeka, with several charges for his alleged part in the death of Destiny Voss, 28 of Topeka, last month. Chambers is charged with the following crimes:
- Murder in the first degree.
- Attempted aggravated robbery.
- Two counts of criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling.
- Criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle.
- Distribute or possess with intent to distribute marijuana.
- Unlawful use of a communication facility.
Past reporting
Police were called around 11:30 p.m. on July 6, 2025 following reports of a gunshot victim arriving at a local hospital. The shooting victim, later identified as Voss, was suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound and died. The TPD learned the shooting occurred in the 3200 block of Southwest Randolph Avenue.
The Topeka Police Department arrested Chambers for his alleged role in the killing on Aug. 6. Police said the death of Voss marks the ninth homicide investigation of 2025.
