Utah County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the Utah County Major Crimes task force had been investigating the distribution of illegal drugs, affecting both Utah and Salt Lake County. The Utah County Major Crimes task force attempted a traffic stop on a suspect involved in that investigation in the area of 7800 South and Redwood Road
During that attempt to apprehend the suspect, Sgt. Andrew Hercules, with the West Jordan Police Department, said an altercation occurred and shots were fired by Task Force agents. The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital in stable condition. One officer was treated by medical teams and released on the scene.
It is currently unclear what led to the altercation or specifically how the suspect suffered his injuries.
Sgt. Hercules said the West Jordan Police Department Officer Involved Critical Incident (OICI) team will be investigating the shooting. The Utah County Sheriff’s Office will be further conducting the investigation into the drug distribution, which is reportedly ongoing and remains active.
The incident was first reported by the Utah Department of Transportation as a “police incident” just after 11 a.m. on Aug. 6. During the closure, UDOT advised drivers to expect delays in the area of 7800 South and 2200 West. Commuters were encouraged to use an alternate route, such as 9000 South.
