Shortly after 11 a.m. on Aug. 6, officers with the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force attempted to execute a search warrant for Hugo Fernando Mora Ayala, 19.
As officers approached the suspect, he “went mobile” in his vehicle. Police say they used a boxing technique to stop the car from fleeing.
Mora then began to flee around patrol vehicles and toward an officer, leading the officer to fire multiple rounds through Mora’s windshield, police say. According to court documents, Mora then struck the officer causing him to flip over the hood onto the ground next to the rear of the car. The officer sustained road rash and bruising.
Police say he then fled eastbound on 7800 south towards Redwood Road. Multiple other officers with major crimes task force followed Mora until they eventually pinned his car. Shortly after, officers were able to take him into custody.
According to Sgt. Andrew Hercules with the West Jordan Police Department, Mora was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Documents show Mora sustained a “minor graze wound” to the head and was treated by hospital staff.
Police say they found over 100 grams of heroin on Mora’s person.
Sgt. Hercules says the incident is being investigated by West Jordan Police’s Officer Involved Critical Incident Team.
Mora is facing multiple felony charges including aggravated assault targeting law enforcement, failure to stop at command of police, and a drug possession charge.
