Bloomington Woman Killed After Being Struck by Vehicle at Busy Intersection

Written from press release

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A 76-year-old Bloomington woman was killed Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street at the intersection of West Third Street and South Liberty Drive, according to the Bloomington Police Department.

Officers responded to the scene around 4:05 p.m. on August 5, where members of the Bloomington Fire Department were already working to extricate the pedestrian from beneath a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The woman, later identified as Dorothy Kent, was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead at 4:53 p.m. in the emergency department.

Police say the driver of the Jeep, a 77-year-old Bloomington woman, told investigators she was traveling north on Liberty Drive and attempting to turn west onto Third Street. She said the traffic light had turned yellow, and seeing no oncoming traffic, she began to turn. The driver told police she felt her vehicle strike something but did not see the pedestrian prior to the collision. She remained at the scene and fully cooperated with the investigation. Police said she showed no signs of impairment.

Witnesses told officers that Kent had been walking north across Third Street on the west side of the intersection when the Jeep turned and struck her in the westbound lanes.

Monroe County Coroner Jeff Hall confirmed Kent’s identity and said an autopsy has been scheduled. The investigation is ongoing. Police are continuing to interview witnesses and are checking with nearby businesses in an effort to locate surveillance video of the crash.
