Kokomo, Ind. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Monday a new partnership with the State of Indiana to expand immigration detention space by 1,000 beds at the Miami Correctional Facility, as part of a national effort to increase federal immigration enforcement under the Trump administration.

Dubbed the “Speedway Slammer,” the facility will be used by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain what officials describe as “the worst of the worst” non-citizens arrested for criminal offenses. The plan was unveiled in a DHS press release touting the expansion as part of a broader initiative funded by the One Big Beautiful Bill, legislation that allocates resources for expanded ICE operations and increases capacity under the controversial 287(g) program that deputizes local law enforcement to assist with immigration enforcement.

“COMING SOON to Indiana: The Speedway Slammer,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem in a statement. “Thanks to Governor Braun for his partnership to help remove the worst of the worst out of our country. If you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Indiana’s Speedway Slammer.”

Governor Mike Braun praised the initiative, saying, “Indiana is taking a comprehensive and collaborative approach to combating illegal immigration and will continue to lead the way among states.”

The announcement comes on the heels of another large-scale detention expansion in Florida known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” signaling a broader federal push to create more capacity for detaining and deporting “non-citizens” amid a shift in national immigration policy.

The Miami Correctional Facility, located in Bunker Hill, Indiana, will be modified to accommodate the new ICE beds. It is not immediately clear whether this expansion will involve the transfer of current inmates or the construction of additional infrastructure.

According to DHS, individuals facing removal proceedings can now “self-deport” using the CBP Home App—a measure also promoted in the press release.
