TWU will switch from chloramine, a mixture of chlorine and ammonia, to chlorine, also known as “free chlorine,” only. This serves as a preventive maintenance procedure and is performed periodically by the city.
Minerals can attach to pipes over time and release when pressure changes occur, resulting in discoloration. Nitrification and the growth of biofilm can also take place. Biofilm can reduce the effectiveness of disinfectants over time. Switching to chlorine only helps cleanse the lines and reduce these issues.
Because free chlorine is stronger than chloramine, some users may experience slight discoloration and a chlorine odor. This should not change water safety and should lessen over time.
TWU encourages dialysis patients to speak with equipment suppliers, as some equipment may require adjustments.
Most aquariums should be unaffected, but TWU recommends fish tank owners confirm that with their equipment manufacturer and has notified local pet stores.
Residents may notice fire hydrants being flushed more frequently to ensure that free chlorinated water flows through less-utilized water lines. TWU will monitor chlorine levels and overall quality to ensure the water safety standards continue to be met.
Similar maintenance has been completed in 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, from July to August 2022, from July to August 2023, from May to October 2024, and in May 2025.
