TWU announced that, starting on May 12, 2025, and lasting about three weeks, the system will temporarily change the current method of disinfecting drinking water.
The normal process uses chloramine, a mixture of ammonia and chlorine, for water disinfection. However, they will start using chlorine only, also known as “free chlorine.” According to a news release from TWU, the temporary conversion to “free chlorine” is a process widely used in preventative maintenance for municipal water systems in Texas and Arkansas.
The procedure was previously performed in 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, July-August 2022, July-August 2023, and May-October 2024.
TWU said the process is needed because minerals may attach to pipes over time and release when there are changes in pressure that may result in discoloration. Free chlorine is used to help cleanse the lines, reduce nitrification and biofilm, and ensure quality water for TWU customers.
Residents may see TWU staff flushing more fire hydrants during the process. Water lines with low flow require additional flushing to ensure free chlorinated water is moving adequately through the water distribution center.
Residents may notice a slight change in the look of their drinking water during the conversion. There may also be a “noticeable chlorine odor and slight discoloration.” TWU said this should lessen after a couple of weeks and will not affect the safety of the water supply.
Patients who receive kidney dialysis should speak with their equipment supplier about different equipment and the varying needs and adjustments needed to accommodate the change. TWU says local pet shops have been informed of the conversion as well. The water provider said they will monitor chlorine levels and water-quality standards daily to ensure water is safe and complies with regulatory standards.
