Rowan County alleged burglar who was shot at by homeowner arrested after car crash: Sheriff

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man accused of breaking into someone’s home and stealing items has been arrested after getting into a car crash early Wednesday morning, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, deputies were called to the 400 block of Crawford Road to investigate a reported residential breaking and entering. The caller said he saw the suspect run into the woods toward Long Ferry Road. He told deputies he fired a single shot at the suspect as he was running away.

About seven hours later, around 3:30 a.m., the Miller Ferry Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle wreck on Long Ferry Road near Dukeville Drive. When they arrived, they found a Ford Taurus that ran off the road and hit a guy wire.

The driver of the Ford was the only occupant and matched the description of the burglary suspect, and deputies were dispatched to the scene.

The man, 34-year-old Steven Eugene Bracken II, admitted that he was at the scene of the burglary and that he was confronted by the homeowner. Bracken was reportedly not injured by the shot that the homeowner fired at him.

Deputies said some of the items Bracken allegedly stole were found inside the Ford. He was charged with breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering. Bracken was booked into the Rowan County Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond.
