Arrest made in 30-year unsolved murder of DC police officer

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Police in Maryland announced they have arrested someone in a decades-old cold case involving the murder of a D.C. police officer.

Though more details will be announced following a press conference on Wednesday, the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) confirmed that a suspect has been arrested in the 1995 murder of then-24-year-old Denna Fredericka Campbell.

MCPD said her live-in boyfriend, Amir Jalil Ali — also known as Kenneth Burnell Wonsom — is believed to have shot and killed Campbell in their White Oak apartment.

At the time of her death, she was a four-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

A Sept. 16, 1995, article in The Washington Post about the Sept. 15 incident described Campbell as an “energetic officer with a ready smile.”

At the time, the article said her boyfriend had been charged with murder — the same charges he faces now, 30 years later. It was not clear why the charges against him were dropped.
