Cyberattack hits North St. Paul, city council retains cybersecurity firm

On Monday, the North St. Paul City Council held an emergency meeting to adopt a contract with cybersecurity experts due to a recent cyberattack on the city’s police department that may have compromised some data.

It’s unclear when the cyberattack happened. The council voted to approve a contract with McDonald Hokpins law firm to deal with the incident and to use Arete within the firm to provide forensics analysis for the business email compromise investigation.

The forensic analysis will cost the city at least $5,000. At the city council meeting, a member said they do have insurance to cover this type of cyber breach and are hoping the services beyond the deductible will be covered.

This incident comes on the heels of a crippling cyberattack on the city of St. Paul. They are still working to resolve it and get all services fully restored more than a week later.
