CHICAGO (WGN) — It’s in a hospital where we find gratitude for survival from David Worsham, a heart attack survivor who met the people who saved his life.

It was this spring when Worsham came home from work with physical discomfort and slurred speech. His wife of nearly 20 years got him into the car and took him to urgent care.

“I was complaining of back pain,” Worsham said. “About a mile down the road, I coded … I had a massive heart attack … and she pulled over into a 7-11 parking lot where a couple of good Samaritans helped my wife perform CPR until the paramedics got there.”

From that parking lot, to the hospital where doctors used what they call the world’s smallest heart pump to get his blood flowing again, Worsham’s 44-year-old life was saved.

And though he has a family history of heart disease—his dad died at the age of 52—Worsham said he never showed any signs himself.

It’s something doctors said they see all the time.

“I know a lot of things are called the ‘silent killer’ but … I really want to drive home this point,” said Dr. Alexandria Kharazi, a heart surgeon. ‘Is that this really is an example of that, right? You can have no symptoms and just have a heart attack.”

For Worsham, it is a sign to listen to his body, and take care of himself and his family.

Which includes listening to his wife, Heather.

“God had other plans and I don’t have to walk alone,” Heather Worsham said “I can watch our girls graduate and watch them go to prom and watch them get married and we can grow old together.”

Worsham agrees with his wife that he has a new lease on life, where one thing is now top of mind.

“Just spend time with my family [and] live my best life,” David Worsham said. “And make sure my daughters grow up happy and healthy.”
