BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A corrections officer was arrested Wednesday, July 30, following an investigation by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO).

Jevon Winfrey, 23, of Baton Rouge, was charged with malfeasance in office, possession with intent to distribute Schedule II drugs, and transactions involving proceeds from drug transactions.

The investigation began after EBRSO received a tip on July 14 about possible narcotics distribution inside the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Winfrey was accused of smuggling tobacco, narcotics, and phones into the facility. A confidential informant claimed this occurred more than once a week. Detectives eventually uncovered the method Winfrey used to deliver the contraband.

Deputies then executed a controlled delivery operation involving Winfrey.

According to EBRSO, Winfrey has been a corrections officer with the agency since Dec. 2021.

He was fired the same day he was arrested.

“The moment we received credible information about this deputy’s involvement, we immediately launched a targeted investigation. No one is above the law — especially those who have sworn to uphold it. This kind of behavior is a betrayal of the badge and will never be tolerated within this agency. We will always take swift action when the integrity of this office is compromised.”

Winfrey was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
