The Westfield Fire Department announced the installation of the two new sirens on Wednesday. These sirens will provide severe weather alert coverage to the southwest and northernmost parts of Westfield.
A third siren, located in the city’s northeastern corner, is scheduled to be operational by the end of August.
“Safety is always our top priority,” said Westfield Fire Chief Rob Gaylor. “By widening the zone of our outdoor warning sirens, we’re increasing the chances of people hearing them and seeking shelter before inclement weather hits. In the end, it increases safety and may reduce the number of calls we respond to after a weather event. It’s a win-win.”
The newly installed sirens are already active, the fire department said, and will be part of the city’s weekly emergency siren test. These tests occur each Friday at 11 a.m.
According to the fire department, each siren has approximately a one-mile coverage radius.
The sirens are designed to alert residents who are outdoors, the fire department stressed. Residents who are indoors may not hear the sirens. Weather sirens are supplemented by alerts sent by weather apps or issued by radio stations.
