The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) said that whether it is a specialized focus of the department’s Traffic Division or proactive efforts from patrols across the county, officers are committed to identifying reckless drivers on the road to reduce serious risks.
“Speeding remains one of the most dangerous behaviors on our roadways, and it’s something our FCPD officers confront daily,” said the department in a press release.
In recent weeks, officers have stopped drivers going well above the speed limit. The police department has also shared dozens of videos that have gone viral on its social media platforms of drivers running red lights and speeding.
In one instance, an officer clocked a driver going 100 mph in a 35 mph speed zone. In other cases, officers have stopped some drivers going over 115 mph, while more were caught weaving in and out of traffic and driving aggressively.
Fairfax County police said that even though some are minor violations, they are high-risk situations that can easily end in tragedy.
FCPD’s Traffic Division conducts regular enforcement campaigns in areas that were considered high-risk based on crash data, community concerns and officer observation.
The police department reminds drivers to always follow the posted speed limit, allow extra time during travel times, stay alert for pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles entering the road, and avoid distractions.
“Lives depend on your decisions behind the wheel. Slow down. Drive responsibly. Help us make Fairfax County’s roads safer for everyone,” noted the FCPD.
