The initiative runs from Aug. 1 to Aug. 3 and slashes the 6% sales tax along with any local taxes from thousands of eligible items.

School supplies, clothing among tax-free items
To help make a “Tax Free Weekend” plan for shoppers, the state’s Department of Revenue sorts products into four categories:
- School supplies
- Computers and techonolgy
- Clothing and footwear
- Bed and bath items
State officials in 2019 issued an advisory opinion detailing which goods can be purchased without an additional tax.
Non-exempt items include goods placed on layaway or other deferred payment plans, clothing and footwear rentals, cosmetics, eyewear, furniture and jewelry.
Retailers can’t opt out of the holiday
Many merchants use the tax-free weekend to encourage shop local drives by offering discounts or other promotions.
But even if a retailer doesn’t want to participate, they’re required to do so by state law. Online purchases over the 72-hour span also quality for the tax break.
Businesses can use the state Department of Revenue’s portal to report weekend sales and receive a deduction. Internet sales made by out-of-state companies must also honor the holiday.
Tax Free Weekend leads to big spending
In 2024, South Carolina shoppers bought more than $22.3 million in tax-free items, saving more than $1.3 million in the process.
