Police responded to the incident on Friday, July 25, at approximately 9:45 p.m. According to the SPD, Paula Garcia was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Jewella Avenue and Sumner Street. The vehicle that hit Garcia had come to a stop at a red light, but when the light turned green, the driver reportedly struck her as she was running across the street.
Due to the extent of her injuries, the victim was not taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police stated that Garcia was wearing a black top and black bottoms, which may have made her harder to see. The driver voluntarily took a test, and no impairment was suspected; however, the investigation remains ongoing.
