This week, elementary school students have been learning about law enforcement and the legal system. And today, they held a mock trial, in which District Attorney Rick Chancey was accused of stealing a bicycle. The elementary kids served on the jury.
We talked to the two college students who “tried” the case for the benefit of the campers.
“I believe it was a great learning experience for myself and the kids.” University of Alabama student Janiya Ingram said, “This was my first mock trial that I did myself as someone who wants to be a lawyer. So, I believe this is a great learning space for everyone who was involved.”
“I learned that the judge may throw you some curveballs.” Hampton University student Ezaria Alexander said, “I learned that it’s very it’s one of those things where you have to come up with something on the spot. You have to be able to either defend your side and your ideas, your opinions, the facts.”
This week, 18 elementary school students participated. They do it again next week with 25 middle school students.
