The coroner’s office confirmed the deceased on Friday as Jonathan Dillard Guidi, 41, of Sacramento.
The Berkeley Unified School District told KRON4 that the incident happened at Sylvia Mendez Elementary School. No students or BUSD staff were on site at the time, due to ongoing construction halting summer programs, said the district.
BUSD said Guidi was working as a subcontractor on a renovation project at Sylvia Mendez. He was taken to a nearby hospital but eventually succumbed to his injuries.
“We value the many contractors and subcontractors who are involved in renovating our schools,” said Trish McDermott, Senior Communications Director at BUSD, in a statement to KRON4. “The family and construction crew are in our thoughts today. We send them strength and comfort at this difficult time.”
The full details of the events that led to the person’s death are not known at this time.
