Tesla robotaxi service to launch in San Francisco this weekend: report

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Tesla could launch its robotaxi service in San Francisco as soon as Friday, according to a report in Business Insider. Citing an internal staff memo, BI reports that the autonomous taxi service’s geofenced service area will include Marin, San Francisco, much of the East Bay, and extend into the South Bay.

Tesla has reportedly accelerated the timeline for the service’s launch, having already rolled out a version of it in Austin, TX. Select Tesla owners in the Bay Area will reportedly receive invitations to try the service.

Unlike the autonomous, unmanned Waymo vehicles that dot San Francisco’s streets, Tesla’s robotaxis will reportedly have human safety monitors in the driver’s seat.
