Gilroy Garlic Festival sells out in anticipated return after deadly shooting, pandemic

GILROY, Calif. (KRON) –  A beloved Bay Area festival has returned after six years. The Gilroy Garlic Festival will be sizzling with garlic this weekend.

Beginning Friday through Sunday, the strong aroma of garlic will be at Gilroy Gardens.

“For decades, this iconic celebration has brought people in our community together over great food, warm hospitality, and a shared love for all things garlic,” said the festival’s website. “While this year’s event will be smaller in scope, we’re thrilled to be able to honor our past, celebrate the present, and build something lasting for the future.

Over the years, the Gilroy festival has brought in more than 8 million people. This year, only 9,000 individuals will be able to experience the flavorful festival. No more than 3,000 tickets were sold for each day.

In 2019, at the 41st Garlic Festival, a 19-year-old gunman opened fire, killing two children and one man. In addition, 20 people were injured. The following year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival had a drive-through format.
