Pennsylvania unemployment claims improve as U.S. hits historical low

(WHTM) — Pennsylvania’s new unemployment claims recovered last week after a short increase earlier this month.

The U.S. Department of Labor reported 10,255 initial unemployment claims in the state for the week ending in July 19. That’s a decrease by 3,423 from the prior week, which interrupted three weeks of falling claims.

Applications for unemployment aid are viewed as representative of layoffs.

Jobless claims fell nationwide for the sixth straight week. Seasonally adjusted initial claims were 217,000, a decrease by 4,000 from the previous week. It’s the lowest level this year since April.

The U.S. unemployment rate was also down to 4.1% in June. Pennsylvania’s rate rose one-tenth of a percentage point to 4% for the month.

Despite the increase, it marked the 26th consecutive month that the state’s unemployment rate was at or below the national average.
