Fortunately, no one suffered injuries, according to Berwyn police.
SkyCam9 flew above the scene in the 6700 block of Ogden Ave., where police say that just after 3:40 p.m., fire crews responded to reports of downed power lines after storms tore through parts of Chicagoland late Thursday afternoon.
First responders were on scene, tending to traffic control and safety measures, when authorities say two main gas lines at the BP Amoco Gas Station, located at 6749 W. Ogden Ave., ignited.
Witnesses report hearing an explosion before the fire broke out. Law enforcement officials later confirmed such reports, adding that the blast occurred just before 3:50 p.m., “causing the complete collapse of the gas station and shattering windows of several nearby structures.”
Police also evacuated some nearby residences and businesses as a precautionary measure.
One witness who spoke with WGN News at the scene said their home suffered damage from the apparent blast.
As of 7:30 p.m., Berwyn police say fire crews remain on scene. Police ask residents to avoid the area or seek alternate routes.
This is a developing story. Check back with WGN for updates.
