“It’s about time for me to hydrate right now,” Ketia Crowley said.
Crowley came prepared for the heat on Wednesday. He had a cooler stuffed with ice-cold water for those making their way to the Chicago Cubs vs Kansas City Royals game at Wrigley Field.
“This one’s colder than my ex’s heart,” he said about a Gatorade in his cooler.
Crowley told WGN-TV he brings that sense of humor to every game, even when it’s especially tough to work. The heat index rose well above 100 degrees in the city Wednesday.
But at the same time, when the weather is red-hot, his business is mint green in the wallet.
“It’s like twice as good on hot days like this,” Crowley said. “Once they drink the beers on the inside, they definitely need the water.”
Tips on how to beat the heat
Speaking of water, Dr. Michael Anderson, an emergency medicine physician with Advocate Health Care, shared a few tips on how to stay safe and avoid suffering from heat-related illnesses.
• Drink more water than usual and don’t wait to feel thirsty to drink water.
• Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Pace yourself – don’t do too much.
• Take frequent breaks in shaded areas or cooling tents.
• Alcohol increases your risk of dehydration.
• Understand the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
• Make sure you check on your neighbors and look out for your co-workers, family and friends.
For those out and about in Chicago who may be looking for a place to cool down and beat the heat, the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District have lists of where to go online.
