The Benicia Fire Department said at 8:15 a.m. that the refinery notified them that its flare stacks would be operating intermittently. The flaring is “due to a mechanical issue with our nitrogen provider,” Valero told KRON4 in a statement.
Valero notified the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) at 6:30 a.m. that the flaring is releasing about 500 pounds of sulfur dioxide.
The Bay Area Air District said it is closely monitoring the flaring and “investigating, responding to complaints, and documenting any violations of air quality regulations.”
No off-site health impacts are expected, according to Benicia FD.
In April, Valero announced its intent to “idle, restructure, or cease refining operations” at the Benicia refinery in April next year.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
