Drawdown at West Point Dam to begin August 1

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — A drawdown is set to begin at West Point Dam on August 1st.

The drawdown is initiated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, to support maintenance happening on the concrete pier between gates 5 and 6.

The lake’s water level will be lowered slowly from elevation 635 feet to 625 feet and will reach 630 feet by Labor Day. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the water level was determined by considering and integrating flood risk management, hydropower, and recreation goals.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also says that the drawdown will occur until it reaches 625 feet by October 1st. After this, maintenance is scheduled to take place October 1, 2025 until January 15, 2026.

The water levels will gradually normalize after maintenance and repairs are finished.
