Alabama implements new area code for central and southeast regions

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WRBL) —The Alabama Public Service Commission has approved the new 483 area code overlay for residents in the state.

The approval that happened on March 6, 2024, granted the new 483 area code to replace the 334 area code that serves Selma, Montgomery, Prattville, Pike Road, Tuskegee, Auburn, Opelika, Phenix City, Eufaula, Dothan, Enterprise, Troy, Greenville, and a large portion of central and southeast Alabama, according to the Alabama Public Service Commission.

Residents in the region with the 334 area code can start adjusting to the 10-digit dialing window beginning on Jan. 23, 2026, prior to the scheduled implementation of the new 483 area code overlay on Feb. 23, 2026.

With the new three-digit code, residents in the designated areas will have enough supply of new telephone numbers as the 334 area code will exhaust by the third quarter of 2026, according to the Alabama Public Service Commission.

The public service commission says new customers and customers requesting an additional telephone line may be assigned the new 483 area code pending activation. The implementation will not affect customers’ existing service in the central and southeast Alabama region.

Although this three-digit area code will be a change for some individuals in Alabama, there will be no changes for three-digit numbers such as 911 and others.
