According to police, the MSP Homicide Unit was notified of an inmate’s death on Friday by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services’ Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IID).
The DPSCS IID states that Elias Alvarado, 30, was found dead in the North Branch Correctional Institution.
An initial investigation determined that Alvarado was last seen standing in the hallway with another inmate before he was later found unresponsive, lying on the ground.
MSP says an inmate has been identified as a suspect but has not yet been formally charged, and the incident remains under investigation.
After the investigation is complete, the incident will be presented to the State’s Attorney’s Office in Allegany County for review.
