Greaux Healthy Bus heads to Shreveport to tackle childhood obesity

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – A statewide effort to fight childhood obesity is rolling into Shreveport next week. The Greaux Healthy initiative, launched by Pennington Biomedical Research Center in partnership with the State of Louisiana, is bringing its Healthy Moves Bus to two local locations to connect directly with families.

Melissa Martin, Director of Greaux Healthy, says the goal is to take decades of research from Pennington and bring it to communities in a meaningful way. “We’ve spent over 35 years researching the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity, and now we’re working to translate that into resources families can use,” said Martin.

The bus will stop at the Knight Street YMCA on Thursday, July 17, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., and at the Wonder Kids Clinic at Willis-Knighton on Friday, July 18. Families who visit can learn more about healthy habits and enroll in the Pennington Generations study, a long-term research project aimed at understanding how lifestyle and behaviors contribute to childhood obesity. Participating family members can earn up to $50 each and receive ongoing educational resources.

The initiative has already launched in Baton Rouge and is active in four Caddo Parish schools. Now, Greaux Healthy is expanding efforts across the state and hopes to connect more directly with local families and healthcare providers.
