Scattered thunderstorms ahead for Southern Utah; hot with a slight chance in the north

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Thursday, Utah! Moisture is on the move today, and that means parts of the state will see the chance of some scattered thunderstorms and showers.

The areas most at risk for storms include southern, central, and eastern Uta,h but there’s a slight chance we see a pop-up along the Wasatch Front. The positioning of high pressure slides over Arizona today and will work in tandem with an area of low pressure pushing north over southern California. The circulation around the low will aid in funneling moisture into the state, meaning some of today’s thunderstorms could bring wetting rains.

The bottom line? An influx of moisture into southern Utah will lead to scattered thunderstorms and an increased flash flood threat, while the Wasatch Front has a slight chance of a storm and average heat.

Flash flooding will be a concern in outdoor recreation areas for the next few days. Nearly all of our National Parks are in the “Possible” category for flash flooding. Arches National Park is the only spot where flash flooding is not expected.  Keep that in mind if you plan on getting out to these areas this week, and keep your eyes to the skies and stay weather aware.

Moisture will push further north for the close of the work week, so isolated storms are expected along the Wasatch Front with scattered storms on deck for southern Utah.

As far as temperatures go, daytime highs will top out in the mid-90s to upper 90s for most valleys, mid to upper 80s for mountain valleys, and upper 90s in our typical hot spots thanks to cloud cover and storms. Highs will stay close to seasonal norms for a few days along the Wasatch Front, which is 95 this time of year, and will be a few degrees below the average of 102 in St. George. 

We will stay unsettled through the beginning of the weekend before drier air arrives.
