Councilman mows lawn at Chapel Ridge to deter squatters

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Jackson City Councilman took it upon himself on Thursday to clean up an apartment complex.

Councilman Vernon Hartley, Ward 5, used his own lawn mowing equipment to improve the appearance of Chapel Ridge Apartments in South Jackson.

In June, the apartment complex was declared a public nuisance. This occurred after mountains of trash piled up at the apartment complex when officials said the owners stopped paying their trash bill.

Hartley said he wants to keep the property presentable in order to avoid squatters and looters.

“We would invite anyone from the apartment area that want to participate, especially picking up litter, please do so. We also like to invite anyone that’s just tired of seeing abandoned buildings where we have a property being destroyed,” the councilman said.

Hartley said he will do what he can to keep up maintenance until the city can hire a maintenance company.
