61-year-old man struck and killed by lightning in NJ; 14 others injured

(WPHL) — A 61-year-old man was struck and killed by lightning, and 14 others were injured Wednesday night at an outdoor archery range in Jackson Township, N.J.

Police identify the man as Robert Montgomery of Cinnamonson Township, N.J. Club members with the Black Knights Bowbenders told Action News at 10 on PHL17 that he and other instructors were teaching a Jackson boy scout troop at their 50-acre range on Perrineville Road when a bolt of lightning struck their campsite. 

“Dirt flew up, and one of the club members, a big guy, got thrown up against the tree,” said Gene Grodzki, Publicity Director, Black Knight Bowbenders. He told Action News at 10 on PHL17 that he felt the electricity of the bolt. “There was no indication of anything. It did not rain. There was no lightning, no thunder, it was just the finger of God came down and POW.”

Around 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jackson police began receiving 911 calls about several people injured from a lightning strike. Police said a 61-year-old man was killed and 14 others suffered injuries ranging from burns to “not feeling well.” Police said that multiple people were knocked unconscious, but after performing CPR bringing they back to consciousness. 

One person was last listed in critical condition at a regional burn center. 

The mayor of Jackson Township said he was saddened by the loss and credited the first responders for their life-saving action.
