SC Democrat suspends campaign for U.S. Senate: ‘Now is the time for unity’

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) — Democrat Lee Johnson announced Wednesday that he is suspending his 2026 campaign for U.S. Senate and pledged to rally around the eventual nominee.

“As the Democratic primary has taken shape, it has become clear that now is the time for unity,” Johnson said. “This was not an easy decision,” he said. “But as Democrats prepare to challenge Lindsey Graham in 2026, the best thing I can do to help in that fight is support the candidate our party selects.”

Johnson exited the race after just months on the campaign trail. He was part of a growing Democratic field hoping to challenge Graham in next November’s general election — a primary race in which name recognition and fundraising would have been key.

The Upstate businessman and engineer worked to boost his profile, traveling to counties across the state and turning to platforms like Reddit to connect with potential voters, but struggled to gain enough momentum or money.

Recent FEC filings showed that Johnson raised just $67,000 during his campaign. That figure was well shy of the reported $1.2 million raised by  Dr. Annie Andrews — the expected Democratic frontrunner — in the first weeks of her campaign.

Logistics professional Kyle Freeman and former U.S. Senate candidate Catherine Fleming-Bruce are also seeking the Democratic nomination in 2026.
