According to a 2025 survey, Summersville Lake in Nicholas County, Stonewall Jackson Lake in Lewis County and Cheat Lake in Monongalia County are three of the top lakefront locations, ranking 39th, 52nd and 133rd respectively.
Summersville Lake is described as “the Little Bahamas of the East” in the survey for its clear blue waters and opportunities for boating, scuba diving and rock climbing. While most of it is federally protected, nearby communities such as Mount Nebo and Long Point offer lake access.
Stonewall Jackson Lake spans more than 2,650 acres and while direct shoreline ownership is limited, nearby communities like Roanoke and Walkersville have elevated lake views, access to marina amenities, and are close to golf courses and hiking trails.
Cheat Lake is just minutes away from Morgantown and is a popular spot with both West Virginia University students and future retirees. The eastern shore of the lake has established neighborhoods with lake access homes. The lake itself is nearly 13 miles and offers multiple outdoor activities.
