DALLAS (KDAF) — Flash floods have devastated parts of parts of the country this week, including the central Texas Hill Country, which took the lives of over 100 people, damaged homes, displaced residents, and raised urgent questions about insurance coverage.

Many homeowners affected by the flood might believe their homeowners insurance will cover the damages. But that’s not the case.

“Flooding is among the most destructive natural disasters, and also one of the most underinsured,” said Leslie Kasperowicz, managing editor and home insurance expert at Insurance.com. “In many cases, property owners are unaware they’re not covered until it’s too late.”

While about 90% of all natural disasters in the U.S. involve flooding, the vast majority of American homeowners remain without any flood-specific coverage. Insurance.com provides a wide range of resources to help consumers understand how flood insurance works, what it covers, and how to file a claim after a flood-related event.
