Last month, Tesla began testing the driverless robotaxis in Austin. That test, according to Reuters, involves a small group of the self-driving taxis picking up a select group of paying passengers that included social media influencers, who posted videos of their rides.
In a separate reply on X, Musk said Tesla’s robotaxi service would be “expanding to a larger service area in Austin this weekend.”
Musk’s updates on Tesla robotaxis come at a time when the EV maker is betting big on autonomous vehicles. Tesla’s core business has taken a hit following Musk’s close involvement and subsequent fallout with the Trump administration.
Tesla’s much anticipated Cybertruck has failed to meet the aggressive sales target Musk set for it. This week, Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of Musk’s social media platform X, stepped down after two years.
Yaccarino’s departure came on the heels of X’s Grok AI chatbot making a series of antisemitic outbursts. Musk blamed the problem on a “system prompt regression that allowed people to manipulate Grok into saying crazy things,” and said the problem had been fixed.
In a separate reply Thursday, Musk said Grok would be “coming to Tesla vehicles very soon. Next week at the latest.”
