2 CPD officers, cyclist injured in crash involving squad car on West Side

CHICAGO — A rollover crash involving a CPD squad car on the West Side left two officers and a cyclist injured early Wednesday morning.

According to Chicago police, the crash unfolded just after 3 a.m. Wednesday in the 400 block of North Central Avenue, in Austin, as the officers were responding to a call in a marked police vehicle.

As the two officers made their way down Central, the officer driving lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over in the middle of the road.

Amid the crash, authorities said a male pedestrian, who was bicycling nearby, was struck by debris from the accident.

The two officers were both injured in the crash.

A male officer involved sustained a hand injury, while a female officer sustained a leg injury. Both were later taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The pedestrian injured sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital in good condition.

Authorities have not said what caused the officer driving to lose control of the car and an investigation is now underway by Area Four detectives.
