A Flash Flood Warning was in effect for several hours Tuesday night, before the water receded by early Wednesday morning. During the worst of the flooding, however, one West Side underpass was about waist-deep in water, and a number of people got stuck.
Underpasses were a big problem overnight for drivers.
“It was bad. It was heavy,” one driver, named Tony, told WGN News. “We heard the warning, but … under (the) bridge it’s really, really bad. We got stuck on the end.”
Several people tried to drive through the floodwater. While some of the higher-profile vehicles made it, many drivers got stuck, and one crashed.
There are no reports of any serious injuries so far, but the rainfall did a lot of damage to the cars that got flooded out. There were also some reports that people needed to be helped out of the floodwater, but Chicago police and fire personnel have not confirmed that yet.
Several social media posts also showed floodwaters close to getting into homes, primarily on the West Side. The National Weather Service also got reports that some garages took on floodwater in the Garfield Park area, which recorded over 5 inches of rain in just about an hour-and-a-half.
Additionally, a Teddy Swims concert at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island was evacuated Tuesday night due to severe weather and approaching lightning.
On the South Side, the White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays were only able to complete seven innings at Rate Field before the game was called due to the rain, with the Blue Jays winning, 6-1.
