Watch for lane shifts, closures along I-70 in Wayne County

WAYNE COUNTY, Ind. – As construction continues along I-70 in Wayne County, drivers should expect some lane restrictions and ramp closures.

This is part of the Revive I-70 project aimed at reducing congestion and improving traffic flow along the interstate corridor.

The three-phase project stretches from west of Cambridge City to Richmond and the Ohio state line and will include additional travel lanes, bridge improvements and pavement upgrades.

This week, travelers will encounter overnight lane closures between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. Here’s the schedule:

Tuesday, July 8 and Wednesday, July 9

  • Overnight lane closure on westbound I-70 from U.S. 27 to Union Pike
  • Overnight lane closure on eastbound I-70 from Union Pike to U.S. 27

Wednesday, July 9 and Thursday, July 10

  • Overnight lane closure on eastbound I-70 from S.R. 121 to Ohio state line.

Friday, July 11

  • Overnight lane closure on westbound I-70 from Ohio state line to S.R. 227

Traffic shifts

Also on the docket this week: traffic shifts.

The Indiana Department of Transportation characterized the shifts as “minor.” Traffic will move closer to the outside shoulder on eastbound I-70 from State Road 121 to the Ohio line and on I-70 westbound from the Ohio line to State Road 227.

Traffic will also shift in turn lanes along eastbound and westbound U.S. 40 at the I-70 interchange, INDOT said.

The shifts will give crews additional room to work on the new inside lanes of I-70. At the same time, it will allow two lanes of traffic to proceed in both directions.

Drivers will encounter reduced lane and shoulder widths in the work zone as a result.

U.S. 40 ramp closures

Starting the week of July 14, INDOT will close the eastbound and westbound I-70 ramps to westbound U.S. 40.

The closures will remain in place until mid-September, INDOT said. Crews will remove existing pavement and begin construction on a revamped interchange.

A reduced speed limit of 55 mph is in place for the Revive I-70 work zone.

INDOT said the schedule is weather-dependent and could change based on conditions.
