Storm chances increase Sunday

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – After a scorching, summer day around Acadiana, storms finally developed to help cool a few areas off. These storms will settle down before 10 p.m. and overnight will remain quiet. Temperatures settle in the upper 70s with passing clouds and high humidity.

Sunday starts out with dry and hot weather, but by lunchtime, storms begin to develop over the eastern areas of Acadiana before moving slowly westward. Temperatures reach the low and mid 90s with a feels-like temperature between 100 and 105 before storms arrive. These storms could produce heavy rainfall with some models showing isolated amounts of two to three inches. This could lead to minor flooding in flood-prone areas. Most of the area, though, should receive between half and inch and an inch of rain. Storms end during the evening hours.

In the tropics, Tropical Storm Chantal strengthened some today. It could get a bit stronger before it makes landfall in South Carolina between Charleston and Myrtle Beach early Sunday morning. It will bring heavy rain to coastal areas along with gusty winds and rough surf. Chantal will not be a threat to Acadiana. The rest of the tropics remain quiet.

Locally, we see high rain chances linger Monday before somewhat drier weather arrives as we return to a more typical summertime weather pattern for next week. We will see daily rain chances around thirty per cent and highs in the lower 90s.
