The Wyzer Friends app was developed by Carolyn Kelly and Joy Taylor, two women over 40 who saw a gap in connection among mature adults, which led them to create the app.
“Wiser is something that Carolyn and I thought about for at least a couple of years. I mean, we were originally talking about our fathers, and it was hard for them to make friends, and they’re in their 80s,” Taylor said. “And then we realized it’s not really for them. It’s for people like us, people in their 40s or 50s or 60 years.”
The founders of the grassroots company said their target audience is people who have moved to a new place for work, retired, empty nesters, divorcees, or anyone who is at a transition point in life and is looking to connect with like-minded people.
Kelly says Wyzr is not another dating app. Instead, it caters to people looking for friendships, fitness buddies, or those with similar hobbies to initiate activities that their other friends may not be interested in.
“When you’re in school, it’s really easy to make friends. And when you’re, you know, working or you have that built-in social circle, but when you reach the age of 40, it’s really tough to make friends, and friends equal longevity,” Taylor said.
According to the American Psychological Association, researchers found that people who have friendships and close confidants are more satisfied with life and less likely to suffer from depression.
“So when you have a tight-knit social circle, you can live a longer and better life. And that’s really the whole reason we started the Wyzr app, Taylor said.”
As many adults cite political and social polarization as reasons they spend less time, if any, on social media, the Wyzr app and its meet-and-socialize intent might be a welcome escape.
“It doesn’t matter what your political ideation is or what tension is going on in the world. You can go in there and relax, have a good time. Just be yourself,” Taylor said.
Another concern that the Wyzr Friends app has addressed is ID verification to protect users from potential fraud as much as possible. They have also adopted strict anti-fraud policies within the app.
“I think for this age demographic, it’s super important to know that you’re on a safe platform. And we do take steps for that very reason. We have AI fraud detection, which helps weed out the scammers,” Taylor said.
Anyone interested in joining Wzyr Friends should download the app from the Apple or Google Play Store, select their interests, and start making friends. The Wyzer Friends app is available for download in all 50 states and five languages. Kelly and Taylor stated that they have a growing group of users from Texas, and users in Louisiana and Arkansas are joining the app daily.
