NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Back in February, the University of New Orleans named Rap Mogul Master P, Percy Miller, President of Basketball Operations.
It was a move meant to bring a higher profile to the team and garner much needed support.
“So these guys are working. They’re putting our pirate on the top. You’re going to see that,” said Miller.
Moving New Orleans Forward Anchor LBJ took a tour of the UNO basketball facilities.
Miller has only been president for less than six months, but things are moving along, and he says it’s a role he relishes for the difference he can make in the lives of young people in this city.
“I grew up here. This is my city, this is my home, and to be able to help inner city kids get an education and to be able to be a student athlete on this campus,” said Miller.
Some of the improvements on campus are paint jobs, graphics in the arena and from the upgraded film room, Miller has an invitation to potential sponsors.
“I’m asking business people that want to join this movement with me come on. Invest into our city team,” said Miller.
In the age of NIL, it is important that the team feels appreciated.
“All these new improvements, lets the team know that you care about them, you love them and that makes them go harder knowing that you invested in them. So, we’re invested in this team and invested in this community,” said Miller.
No doubt the arrangement between the schools and the rapper turned businessman, is unusual.
At a time when Miller’s success could dictate sailing off into the sunset and enjoying the spoils of his work, he has chosen to give back and write a history of lessons learned on the students.
“The legacy I will leave on the program is hard work, consistency. Don’t give up. We can overcome anything,” said Miller.
