Mecklenburg County offering homeowner grants to help with rising costs

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Mecklenburg County homeowners may now be eligible for grant money to help ease the burden of rising home costs.

Starting on Tuesday, July 1, through November 21, 2025, qualifying residents can apply for up to $650 in tax relief through the county’s Homes Program.

If you live in the Town of Davidson, you may be eligible for an additional grant of up to $534, thanks to a special partnership between the town and the county.

Officials said there are no age limits, and your home doesn’t have to be paid off to qualify. The program is designed to help homeowners with lower to moderate incomes by applying grant funds directly to their property tax bill.

Here’s how it works:

  • Grant amounts are based on 35% of your 2025 Mecklenburg County property taxes, capped at $650
  • For Davidson residents, an additional 35% of your town taxes can be covered, up to $534
  • Funds are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis

To qualify, you must:

  • Own and live in a home in Mecklenburg County
  • Have lived in the home as your primary residence for the past 3 years
  • Have your name on the deed, title, or life estate
  • Have a household income at or below 80% of the area’s median, based on family size
For example, a single-person household must earn less than $62,850, while a family of four must earn under $89,750
